Melbourne’s original dog obedience club

Founded in 1958, Southern Obedience Dog Club has been helping Melbourne dog owners train, compete and connect for over 65 years.

Our Story

Southern Obedience Dog Club was founded in June 1958 by a group of passionate dog owners who wanted to promote responsible dog ownership and obedience training in Melbourne’s south east.

Over 65 years later, the club remains true to that original vision – run entirely by volunteers, for the benefit of its members and their dogs.

In 1973 the club purchased its own five acre property at Soden Road, Bangholme – making it the only dog obedience club in Victoria to own its own grounds. In 1979 the club was incorporated as a Community Advancement Society, ensuring it would always operate for the benefit of all members.

Today the club has an excellent reputation within the dog obedience community, built on quality training, dedicated instructors, and a genuine love of dogs.

Our Facilities

Our fully fenced five acre property at Bangholme is purpose-built for dog training and completely owned by the club. Members have access to everything they need in one place.

Dedicated training rings:

Obedience and jump equipment always available in the front rings

Agility and puppy areas:

Fully fenced sections for agility and puppy training, also available for members to free run their dogs outside of class times

Dog Pens:

Members with multiple dogs can use the on-site pens on training days to secure dogs while they’re in class

Flood Lighting:

Training nights are fully lit, with tokens available for members who want to use the lights outside of scheduled sessions

The grounds are also available for hire for dog-related events. Contact us for details.
